Introduction

Arbitrum is an Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem developed by Offchain Labs. It uses Optimistic Rollup technology to process transactions on Layer 2 while using Ethereum as the underlying settlement and security layer. Arbitrum One launched its public mainnet on August 31, 2021.

Arbitrum is built on Arbitrum Nitro, an Optimistic Rollup system that includes Fraud Proofs, a Sequencer, Token Bridges, Transaction Compression, and an Ethereum-compatible execution environment. Nitro also integrates Geth, Ethereum's execution client, into the Arbitrum Layer 2 environment.

ARB Token

ARB is the governance token of the Arbitrum ecosystem. ARB holders can participate in Arbitrum DAO governance, including decisions related to protocol upgrades, treasury allocation, grants, and other ecosystem initiatives.

ARB is not used to pay standard gas fees on Arbitrum One. Transaction fees are paid using ETH. The protocol allows governance to approve inflation of up to 2% of the total supply per year.

Initial Supply: 10,000,000,000 ARB
Token Type: Governance Token
Network: Arbitrum One / Ethereum Layer 2
Gas Token: ETH

Token Distribution

ARB's initial supply of 10 billion tokens was distributed across the Arbitrum DAO Treasury, team and contributors, investors, users, the Arbitrum Foundation, and DAOs building on Arbitrum.

Arbitrum DAO Treasury: 35.28%
Team, Contributors & Advisors: 26.94%
Investors: 17.53%
Arbitrum Users / Airdrop: 11.62%
Arbitrum Foundation: 7.50%
DAOs Building on Arbitrum: 1.13%

Technology

Arbitrum uses Optimistic Rollup technology to execute transactions on Layer 2 and settle transaction data through Ethereum. This architecture is designed to increase transaction capacity while reducing costs compared with executing transactions directly on Ethereum.

Arbitrum Nitro provides the core technology stack for Arbitrum. It includes a Sequencer for transaction ordering, fraud-proof infrastructure, transaction compression, token bridges, and an Ethereum-compatible execution environment. Nitro also integrates Geth, Ethereum's execution client.

Team & Organization

Arbitrum was developed by Offchain Labs, a blockchain technology company founded by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner.

The Arbitrum Foundation supports the development of the Arbitrum ecosystem, while protocol governance is conducted through Arbitrum DAO. The governance structure also includes a Security Council responsible for certain security measures and emergency actions.

Governance

ARB holders can participate in Arbitrum DAO governance and vote on proposals related to protocol upgrades, treasury and ecosystem fund allocation, grants and incentive programs, network standards, ecosystem initiatives, and governance and security decisions.

ARB holders can also delegate their voting rights to other governance participants.
