Introduction
Kerrigan (KRGN) is a privacy-focused Layer 1 cryptocurrency combining multi-algorithm Proof of Work, Sapling shielded transactions, masternodes, on-chain governance, and the Hivemind Protocol. The network is designed to support both GPU and ASIC mining while developing infrastructure for decentralized AI inference.
KRGN is the native cryptocurrency of the Kerrigan network. The mainnet launched in March 2026 with four mining algorithms operating in parallel, optional zero-knowledge privacy, collateralized masternodes, and a roadmap toward decentralized GPU computing and AI inference.
Project Background
Kerrigan uses four Proof of Work algorithms simultaneously: X11, KawPoW, Equihash 200,9, and Equihash 192,7. Each algorithm maintains its own difficulty adjustment while contributing to the same blockchain, allowing both ASIC and GPU hardware to participate in network security.
X11 and Equihash 200,9 support ASIC mining, while KawPoW and Equihash 192,7 are designed for GPU mining. Each algorithm targets approximately 480-second block intervals, producing a combined network block time of approximately 120 seconds.
Kerrigan integrates the Sapling protocol for shielded transactions using zk-SNARK zero-knowledge proofs. Users can transact through transparent addresses or use shielded addresses for transactions that conceal the sender, recipient, and transferred amount.
The Hivemind Protocol adds a seal-based consensus layer on top of Proof of Work. Active miners can participate in cryptographic block attestations using BLS signatures, with chain selection incorporating the resulting seal information alongside conventional Proof of Work.
The network also uses collateralized masternodes for network services and governance. A regular masternode requires 10,000 KRGN collateral, while the 40,000 KRGN BroodNode tier has increased Hivemind selection weight.
History
Kerrigan's genesis block was created on March 11, 2026, with the mainnet launching in March 2026. The project was introduced as a multi-algorithm Proof of Work cryptocurrency combining privacy technology, masternodes, and a new seal-based consensus system.
The network is built on a Dash-derived codebase and uses elements of Dash's deterministic masternode infrastructure, quorum services, and spork system. Kerrigan adds its own multi-algorithm Proof of Work engine, Sapling integration, and Hivemind Protocol.
Sapling shielded transactions activated at mainnet block 500. Hivemind was introduced in stages, beginning with miner identity commitments and progressing to soft sealing and full Hivemind chain-selection functionality.
The Kerrigan Core v1.2.0 release activated Hivemind fork-choice protection through a coordinated mainnet hard fork at approximately block 55,000. Subsequent releases focused on chain recovery, wallet compatibility, consensus handling, and Hivemind seal processing.
Kerrigan has continued development of its core software, mining infrastructure, SDK, wallet tooling, and ecosystem services. The project is also developing an AI inference network intended to extend the utility of GPU hardware beyond conventional cryptocurrency mining.
Tokenomics and Emissions
KRGN has a maximum supply of 52,560,000 coins. The initial block reward is 25 KRGN, with a target network block time of 120 seconds. The block reward halves every 1,051,200 blocks, approximately every four years.
The V1 block reward is divided among five allocations. Mining receives 20%, masternodes receive 20%, the treasury receives 15%, and development and founders receive 5%. The remaining 40% was established as a growth allocation during the bootstrap phase.
During the current bootstrap phase, the 40% growth allocation is burned rather than distributed. The project states that this allocation is intended to transition to AI GPU inference providers in V2, while the mining, masternode, treasury, and development allocations remain unchanged.
The treasury allocation is designed to fund operational costs, ecosystem partnerships, marketing, community activities, and related infrastructure. The development and founders allocation supports ongoing protocol development.
Masternode operators must lock 10,000 KRGN for a standard masternode. BroodNodes require 40,000 KRGN and receive increased consensus selection weight within the Hivemind system.
Roadmap
Kerrigan's V1 development focuses on establishing the core blockchain, four-algorithm Proof of Work system, Sapling privacy, masternodes, governance, and Hivemind consensus infrastructure. These components form the foundation of the network's initial mining-focused phase.
The planned V2 phase expands Kerrigan into a decentralized GPU compute network for AI inference. GPU operators are intended to register as inference providers, supply compute resources, and receive KRGN through both block rewards and payments for inference workloads.
Planned V2 infrastructure includes provider registration, peer-to-peer job distribution, provider selection using VRF mechanisms, compute attestations, and dispute handling. The project also plans to redirect the current 40% growth allocation toward AI inference providers once the V2 system is deployed.
Longer-term development includes expanded mining pool support, desktop and mobile wallet infrastructure, a public explorer with multi-algorithm and shielded transaction support, additional exchange integrations, and potential wrapped KRGN deployments on EVM-compatible networks.
