Introduction
Qubic (QUBIC) is a high-performance Layer 1 network designed for decentralized computing, smart contracts, artificial intelligence, and feeless transactions. The network uses Useful Proof of Work (UPoW), a quorum-based consensus system, and a fixed set of 676 Computors to process transactions and execute smart contracts with rapid finality.
QUBIC is the native currency of the Qubic network. It is used for value transfer, smart contract execution, network operations, and participation in the Qubic ecosystem. Qubic uses an epoch-based architecture built around ticks rather than conventional blocks, with transactions finalized through quorum agreement among Computors.
Project Background
Qubic was founded by Sergey Ivancheglo and is built around a quorum-based computer architecture designed to combine distributed ledger technology, smart contracts, and useful computation. The network uses 676 Computors that execute transactions and smart contracts and participate in quorum-based consensus.
Unlike conventional blockchains, Qubic does not organize its ledger around blocks. The network processes transactions through ticks, which represent network state snapshots. A tick is finalized when the required quorum of Computors agrees on the resulting state, allowing transactions to reach finality without waiting for multiple block confirmations.
Qubic's consensus system requires agreement from at least 451 of the 676 Computors. The active Computor set is selected through weekly epochs, with mining performance used to determine which identities qualify for Computor positions.
Useful Proof of Work is used to rank potential Computors and direct computational resources toward AI-related workloads. Qubic's AI initiative, Aigarth, is designed to use distributed computational resources for the development and training of artificial neural networks.
Qubic smart contracts use a bare-metal execution model rather than a conventional virtual machine. Contracts are written in C++ and interact with the Qubic Programming Interface (QPI). Smart contract functions can receive structured inputs, execute directly within the network's contract environment, and produce deterministic state changes.
Smart contracts must be approved through the Qubic quorum before activation. Once approved, a contract undergoes a 676-share Initial Public Offering using a Dutch auction. The proceeds create the execution-fee reserve used to fund subsequent contract execution.
Qubic also includes decentralized exchange functionality through Qx, an on-chain exchange implemented as a smart contract. The ecosystem supports tokens, contract shares, oracles, decentralized applications, and other programmable financial infrastructure.
History
Qubic was founded by Sergey Ivancheglo, who is also known for his work on IOTA and NXT. The project was designed around a quorum-based computing architecture intended to provide high-performance distributed computation and smart contracts.
Qubic's network architecture developed around epochs, Computors, quorum voting, smart contracts, and Useful Proof of Work. Rather than adopting the conventional block-based model used by many Layer 1 networks, Qubic uses ticks as the primary unit of state progression.
The Qubic ecosystem introduced its first smart contract through Qx, a decentralized exchange. The Qx contract was initially funded through the sale of 676 shares to the community, establishing the contract IPO model later used by other Qubic smart contracts.
Qubic subsequently expanded its smart contract ecosystem, developer tooling, node infrastructure, AI research, and Useful Proof of Work mining. The network's open-source development model includes the Qubic Core node, command-line tools, SDKs, RPC infrastructure, developer kits, and smart contract repositories.
During 2025, Qubic implemented its first major token emission halving at Epoch 175. In June 2026, the Computors approved the second halving, which took effect at Epoch 227 in August 2026. These changes progressively reduce the amount of newly circulating QUBIC while maintaining the protocol's gross weekly issuance.
Qubic's development continued through 2026 with upgrades to the core protocol, mining algorithms, smart contracts, oracle infrastructure, developer tooling, and node software. The public Qubic Core repository remains actively maintained, with regular protocol releases and network upgrades.
Tokenomics and Emissions
QUBIC is the native currency of the Qubic network. The protocol has a maximum supply of 200 trillion QUBIC, reduced from the original 1 quadrillion maximum through community-approved changes to the monetary system.
Qubic has a gross issuance rate of 1 trillion QUBIC per seven-day epoch. This is the protocol's fixed gross emission amount. A portion of each epoch's issuance is subsequently burned or otherwise removed from circulation, meaning the amount of QUBIC entering circulating supply is lower than the gross emission.
The emission schedule reduces net issuance through recurring halving events. Epochs 175 through 226 targeted approximately 450 billion QUBIC of net emissions per epoch, while Epoch 227 through 278 targets approximately 240 billion. Later epochs continue the reduction toward progressively smaller net emissions.
QUBIC emissions are allocated through the network's Computor reward system, the Computor Controlled Fund, QEarn, and protocol burn mechanisms. Computor revenue is calculated according to network performance and distributed through the protocol's emission and routing system.
Qubic uses several burn mechanisms to reduce the amount of QUBIC entering circulation. These include smart contract IPO activity, dust-threshold burns, and other protocol-specific mechanisms. Smart contract execution also consumes Qubic Units, with the execution units being burned as part of the contract model.
QUBIC is designed for feeless ordinary transactions. Network fees are not charged to users for standard transfers, while smart contract execution is financed through the contract's IPO-generated execution reserve.
The Qubic monetary model therefore combines a fixed gross weekly issuance rate with increasing burn activity and scheduled reductions in net emissions. The theoretical maximum remains 200 trillion QUBIC, while the circulating supply changes according to issuance and burn activity.
Roadmap
Qubic's development roadmap focuses on high-performance smart contracts, Useful Proof of Work, decentralized artificial intelligence, ecosystem applications, and continued improvements to network infrastructure.
A major focus is Aigarth, Qubic's decentralized AI initiative. The project is designed to use distributed computational resources from the Qubic mining ecosystem for training and developing artificial neural networks, with the broader objective of creating decentralized intelligence infrastructure.
Useful Proof of Work continues to evolve through new mining algorithms and computational approaches. Recent Qubic Core releases have introduced and tested algorithms including Ant Colony and BPP9000, alongside optimization work intended to improve the efficiency of the mining and Computor-selection process.
Smart contract development remains another major area of activity. Qubic is expanding its contract ecosystem, developer tools, QPI functionality, oracle capabilities, and contract deployment infrastructure. New contracts are proposed and approved through the network's quorum-based governance process.
Developer infrastructure includes the AIO Qubic Dev Kit, which packages a local Qubic Core node, faucet, wallet, and RPC environment for smart contract development. Qubic also maintains TypeScript, Go, Java, .NET, and other integration libraries for application development.
Network infrastructure development includes continued optimization of the Qubic Core node, lightweight node implementations, RPC services, explorer infrastructure, seamless epoch transitions, and improved support for operators running Computor infrastructure.
